Earlham College Southwest Field Studies
CHA has hosted Earlham College Southwest Field Studies annually since 1999. Earlham students typically stay for one week each spring. Annual programs are a saguaro census led by Tom Orum and Nancy Ferguson, retired, of the University of Arizona, and discussions with CHA staff regarding southwest land and water use issues and desert adapted living. Their visit also typically involves a 1or 2-day work project, and an opportunity for solo retreats in desert wildlands. Additional programs have included sustainable architecture and alternative home tour, plant distribution study, insect studies, natural history walks, and up to 6 days of backpacking in nearby mountains.
